PhytoGlycogen Powder is a next-generation plant polysaccharide extracted from sustainably grown, non-GMO sweet corn and other plants using a patented, closed-loop, water-based extraction technique. This emphasises its plant origin and distinguishes it from animal sources. The naturally occurring carbohydrate is isolated, purified, and dried to create a bio-identical cosmetic ingredient that is chemically identical to the glycogen produced in human tissue.
PhytoGlycogen is a natural, plant-based molecule with a unique, branched structure that looks like tiny spheres. Unlike starch, which has a more rigid structure, phytoglycogen is made of many short, flexible chains that form a dense outer layer. This special structure helps it work well in skin and hair care products. It is very similar to glycogen found in animals, like in the liver, but comes from plants. Its structure is held together by sugar linkages, and the way these chains branch affects its stability and how it works.
Unlike starch, which has larger granules, phytoglycogen has smaller particles and is made through natural processes in plants.
In the body, glycogen is an on-demand energy reserve. In the skin, endogenous glycogen is synthesised in response to stressors, such as UV exposure, to help maintain cellular vitality. Over time, our natural glycogen reserves decline, which can lead to dullness and a rough texture.
Applied topically, PhytoGlycogen Powder supports cellular metabolism and energy within skin cells. In cosmetic formulations, phytoglycogen serves as a substrate for enzymes, which break down glycosidic linkages and release glucose. It’s a fast-acting humectant, drawing water to the epidermis and forming a flexible, weightless film. The result is skin that feels smoother, looks more even and appears more hydrated – attributes highly valued in modern cosmetic formulations.
Although we don’t make therapeutic claims, it’s worth noting that topical glycogen can be an available energy source for the skin’s natural processes. This means a fresher, more refined surface appearance, especially for mature or environmentally stressed skin types.
PhytoGlycogen’s branched molecular structure traps water molecules at multiple points, amplifying hydration and providing instant softness.
The flexible chains and outer surface of phytoglycogen enhance its structural properties, resulting in excellent water retention.
Hyaluronic Acid: Boosts water retention, plumps the skin. PhytoGlycogen + Hyaluronic Acid = enhanced hydration and anti-ageing.
Niacinamide: Evens out skin tone and texture.
Panthenol: Adds extra soothing benefits for sensitive skin.
Unlike some humectants that pull moisture from deeper skin layers, PhytoGlycogen retains environmental water for a calm, balanced complexion without compromising barrier integrity.

1. Will PhytoGlycogen Powder clog pores?
No. Its molecular size and water solubility make it non-comedogenic and suitable for all skin types. It is also dermatologically tested for safety and suitability for sensitive skin.
2. Can I use PhytoGlycogen in a toner?
Yes. It dissolves in water and is stable in a low pH environment of toners.
3. Does PhytoGlycogen replace Hyaluronic Acid?
No. The two work best together. Hyaluronic Acid holds water, and PhytoGlycogen enhances the visible plumping effect.
4. Is this the same as sea glycogen?
No. PhytoGlycogen is plant-derived, sustainable, and vegan, unlike some marine glycogen sources.
5. What is the recommended order of application?
When layering skincare, apply lighter water-based serums containing PhytoGlycogen before oils or heavier creams.
6. Can I include it in cold-process soaps?
Not recommended; high pH of soap may reduce efficacy.
7. Does it have a taste or smell?
It is odourless and tasteless, leaving no fragrance in finished products.
8. Is it suitable for baby products?
Yes, as long as used at standard cosmetic concentration and under GMP conditions.
9. What preservative system pairs best?
Broad-spectrum preservative like Preservative Eco.
10. Can it be used in micellar waters?
Yes. Dissolve up to 1% in the water phase before adding surfactants.
